Yesterday, Alexandria met with Activate PR, a community-led organization seeking to build affordable and sustainable housing for the families of Puerto Rico. They toured a property in Santurce, Puerto Rico at risk of being bought out by an Airbnb investor for their current campaign, La Base Comunitaria, which aims to purchase property and transform it into long-term, sustainable community housing. Currently, this building is home to elderly tenants who have been central to the fabric of this community and have nowhere else to go.
This is a critical moment to demonstrate how community-led solutions can stop displacement and preserve Puerto Rican neighborhoods — and Activate PR’s movement to protect, cultivate, and celebrate Puerto Rican innovation — with dignity.
La Base Comunitaria would feature multipurpose rooms for meetings and cultural events, a community kitchen for sharing food and cultural knowledge, and a unique solar-powered, affordable housing initiative. At La Base, apartments would be available for affordable, long-term leases, designed to keep Puerto Rican families in their community without fear of displacement due to the speculative market.
